The Countdown Conspiracy Channel 4's 'Countdown' - the words and numbers game - is not actually a game at all but a carefully rehearsed TV programme. The order of letters and made up words is worked out in advance to a script, as is the numbers game. The competitors are not members of the general public at all but are unemployed actors and actresses never before seen on television. The 'game' was originally conceived by Channel 4 and the actors' union Equity to generate employment for their members in an otherwise over subscribed industry. Hosts Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman are sworn to secrecy and have maintained the cover up for 20 years. The audience is, however, real. Unreliable Facts from The Brains Trust |
